New Workshop Coming Soon

Well...it has been awhile since I posted on Story Sticks and thought I would start using this blog again. I am in the midst of designing and starting to build my own little shop and would like to document the process for both myself and others to benefit. I am the type to research something to death before I buy and geez, I have certainly done that with this project. I am by no meens an expert in construction, or any of these topics, as I deal with finance for a living. But I am very good at googling and searching blogs, woodworking forums, magazines, etc. on these various topics. I also know how I want the building to function for myself for the type of projects I like to do.

As I mentioned, this has been thought about for a few years and we finally found a spot to build it in our back yard. Originally, there was a great location in the front yard where I wanted to build but no can do with our township. Outbuildings have to be to the side or behind the home. So here is the location before any clearing.....There is a lot to be cleared.

The front corner of the building will be just to the left of the dead tree in the center of the back yard with a bush growing out of it. There will also be a small road coming in the side were I can load and unload wood, new tool purchases, etc. You know the drift.

As far as design and what I want that will be for another post. Generally speaking, the building will be 24x34.66'. Don't ask about the 34.66' in length.....that is due to a square footage rule with our township that any building less than 30' from a side property line has to be less than 832 square feet. Hence, we are 20' from the property line and we have a 34.66' building.

Also, I originally wanted 25x35 until I realized that 24x36 is common sizing for 4x8 sheets. How strange that 16" on center also goes nicely into these numbers.....what a coincidence.

So here are a couple general sketchup photos...Note that these were done with my original 25x35 size:

This is a good gerneral idea of what it will look like. The original thought was to run theDC piping under the slab. That may have changed slightly since these pictures and I am now, 95% sure, that there will be a crawl space under a wood sub-floor. This will make it much easier to run electrical and DC piping under the floor and be able to make changes.

If there is anyone actually reading this blog and have suggestions/input please do not be shy to comment. Next post will be clearing the back yard and digging a big old trench for the power lines.

Garage Cleaning and a few things

We are starting to do more workouts at home so I have been wanting to make plyo boxes. Some of the workouts we do incorporate them for jumping on. They are fairly simple to make and Home Depot had Birch Plywood on sale for $25. I bought two sheets and was able to make 3 boxes. Not the best plywood but it will work. I made a 20" tall one that can be used in conjunction with my saw bench and two 24" tall boxes. The taller ones will also be handy with woodworking as I can use them for assembling projects.

One tool that would be nice to have some day after cutting all of this plywood is a Festool saw with the shop vac attachment. Fairly pricey so that will have to wait. Here is a picture of the boxes stacked in the corner.

I also rearranged the garage and had a table sitting were the plyo boxes are above. The table was original made to be an outfeed table for the table saw but it never happened. I finally was able to get it set up to work which I think is going to be very nice. Here is a picture of the new setup.

The final item I made this weekend were two push sticks which I have needed. I had a poorly made one before that did not work that well. These I spent some time on forming with the bandsaw and a file. I also put a coat of Watco Danish Oil on them.

I spent the rest of the time cleaning and getting the garage better organized. I also completed the drawer in the cabinet which was nice to get that completed. Overall, it was a very busy weekend.

Updating Electrical

When I bought my table saw almost three years ago I had to add 220 to the garage to run the saw. After lots of research I was able to run the wire and add a new circuit breaker to the electrical box. It ended up being easier than I thought it would...just very time consuming. Then last year I replaced the outlets over the old workbench with 20 amp outlets....this also required running 12-2 wire and adding another breaker.

Well, with the recent purchase of some new tools and trying to get my shop more functional, I decided to add two more 220 outlets and run another 20 amp circuit. The far east wall had no outlets and it would be very helpful if I had outlets on that wall with the layout. So I ended up running wire from the existing 220 up into the ceiling, down the east wall and added two additional 220 outlets. There will only be one tool at a time running off of 220. At the same time, I ran new 12-2 wire and added five 20 amp outlets on the east wall. This is nothing exciting at all but will make things so much easier to not have extension cords everywhere. It also has taken almost two full days to complete. Here are some pictures...

This is where the original 220 outlet was. I updated the conduit with one inch since I am carrying two wires in the conduit. This outlet will be the new home for my Grizzly G0513x bandsaw that is currently on backorder until January.

This is the east wall that had no outlets. You can see the conduit coming out of the ceiling. The top outlet is 220 and the bottom are 20 amp 110 outlets.

The only item remaining is to hook the new 20 amp outlets into the box with a new breaker. The wire is hanging in front of the box but I was too tired to complete everything.

The next project is to build a rolling cart for the Delta 22-580 planer with storage below and to clean and organize everything. I would also like to build a tool cabinet above my woodworking bench for my hand tools. I also need to build some organization units for Colleen's room so she can get her scrapbooking organized....and the list goes on and on and on....
